HOW AGROCHEMICALS TOOK OVER OUR FARMS
After World War II, the world was left with vast stockpiles of chemicals originally developed for warfare. Instead of being safely disposed of, many of these substances were repurposed into synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides, giving rise to industrial agriculture. What was once designed to destroy life on the battlefield was rebranded as a solution to “feed the world.” Over time, this shift created an illusion of abundance. While short-term yields increased, the long-term cost was quietly passed on to the land, the water, and the food we consume. Soil life was disrupted, natural fertility declined, and farming became increasingly dependent on external chemical inputs. The so-called Green Revolution brought scale and speed—but it also tied farmers to a system driven more by corporate profit than ecological balance. Decades of chemical farming have stripped the soil of its living microbes, driven away earthworms and beneficial insects, and weakened the natural resilience of crops. As chemicals increased, so did resistance—pests adapted, becoming stronger and harder to control. The deeper tragedy is that many farmers today harvest less than what previous generations achieved using natural methods, while spending far more on inputs. Debt has become common, and farming—once a self-reliant way of life—has turned into a cycle of dependency that is difficult to escape. Why FABORG exists Gowri Shankar, founder of FABORG, understands this reality personally. He is the grandson of a farmer who was forced to sell his land to repay pesticide-related debts—a loss that left a deep and lasting impact. At the time, he was too young to change what happened. Today, that experience shapes his mission. FABORG was created to help farmers regain control over their land, their costs, and their independence—by restoring soil health, reducing chemical dependence, and offering affordable, practical natural solutions rooted in traditional knowledge and real farm experience. The goal is not to go backward, but to rebuild a balanced system where the soil is alive, farmers are supported, and agriculture works with nature again—not against it.
